Tailored education

In October 2012, the bill “Passend Onderwijs” (adequate education) was passed, which means that schools have new responsibilities since August 1, 2014. Schools are responsible to ensure that every child has an appropriate place to learn. Previously, parents of a child who needed extra support had to search for a suitable school. It is the intention of the new law that more children attend mainstream education with suitable support.

The goals of the new law are:
• Appropriate teaching when possible and addressing educational limitations
• Better-equipped teachers
• Less bureaucracy
• Budgetary control and transparency
• Fewer children at home
• Better deployment of additional support in education

Our school is a member of the consortium of Passend Primair Onderwijs regio Leiden. The schools within PPO region Leiden provide, together, an appropriate education for children aged 4-13 years. We base this on their development potential and their talents. Both ordinary primary schools and the schools for special (primary) education work together on this. The municipalities in our region are: Voorschoten, Wassenaar, Oegstgeest, Kaag en Braassem, Leiderdorp, Zoeterwoude and Leiden. Approprioate education consultant and espert team

We receive support provided by de PPO consortium from a Passend Onderwijs consultant and experts from their team. This team includes specialists in the areas of behavior, locomotion, speech and language and learning difficulties. If we as a school are unsure on how to proceed, we utilize these specialists. The specialists look at the situation, then advise and coach teachers and / or internal supervisor with the goal of appropriate education, focusing on the educational needs of the child.

Internal support

Organization of student guidance and support

Our school has, at every level, a clear structure with regard to counseling and support. At group level, the teacher gives the guidance. By using observations and an extensive child tracking to follow the development and progress of the children, the class teacher, if necessary, can recommend additional support in the group. Should a child need more support than the child is registered with the Leerplein, the child receives additional support in a small group of one of the supporters. The parents get information at the start of the support and help in the completion of an overview of what has been done, the result and advice for any sequel. All combination groups have the support of a teacher, an internal Supervisor. All information is kept in the child tracking system, and helps the teacher when identifying any issues and assists the teacher in creating action plans.

They also regularly conduct interviews with the Leerplein and parents whether they support contacting Passend Onderwijs, the school advisory service. At regional level, the school participates in the consortium Passend Primair Onderwijs Region Leiden (www.pporegioleiden.nl)

The school uses the services of Education Advisory Leiden. The school counselor is a remedial or a GZ psychologist.

Logopedie - Speech therapy
Speech therapy at our school is operated by a speech therapist from OnderwijsAdvies. It is for students who have difficulties in speech, voice, language and hearing. After parental consent, students are screened around their 5th birthday. The findings of the screening are discussed with teachers and parents. The findings of the screening will be discussed with teachers and parents. Should speech therapy be needed, the speech therapist will discuss the following with the parents; advice, referral to self-employed speech therapist, or control (short-term) guidance in school.

Also, students from other groups may be signed up by parents, teachers or pediatrician for speech therapy research.

The JGZ staff of our school consists of Mrs. F. van 't Veer (pediatrician), Mrs. M Akbalak (social worker) and Mrs. R. Diver (assistant) They can be reached on Monday, Tuesday and even weeks on Wednesdays. If parents wish, they can always contact the pediatrician directly.  

The examination schedule is as follows:

• Group 2; preventive health
• Group 7; screening

Student tracking system

The group teacher follows the development of the children in the group closely. They observe the child during lessons, during the guided practice after an instruction, the questions that a child asks while working independently, or made when reviewing work during the creative lessons. They record notable events; look at what a child needs and regularly records what they observe.

To get an objective picture of the learning progress of the children we use the standardized IEP student tracking system. The foundation of the student’s learning is monitored using KiVa and IEP program.

Education Advice
The school uses the services of a school advisory service. The school counselor is a remedial or a GZ psychologist. They perform investigations on behalf of the school. It usually involves an intelligence research and consequent recommendations regarding educational needs, further investigation or references to external aid agencies. Such investigations follow an extensive process.

Speech therapy
Speech therapy at our school is operated by a speech therapist Education Advisor. It is for students who have difficulties in speech, voice, language and hearing. After parental consent, students are screened around their 5th birthday. The findings of the screening are discussed with teachers and parents. If it turns out that speech therapy counseling is needed, the speech therapist with parents discuss the following; advice, referral to self-employed speech therapist. Parents, teachers or the pediatrician for speech therapy research may register students from other groups. Due to the limited budget, the treatments are not administered at school.
